Yes, We Can Prosper Without Growth
Giorgos Kallis, 2015
Economic growth is not only becoming more and more difficult in advanced economies, but that it is also socially and ecologically unsustainable. Like terminally ill patients, whole populations are asked to suffer without end, just so that their economies score a few extra decimals in the GDP scale, to sustain the profits of the 1%. The blind pursuit of economic expansion stokes a cycle of financial crisis, and is wrecking our world. It’s time for an alternative. Degrowth is a project of radical socioecological transformation calling for decolonizing the social imaginary from capitalism’s pursuit of endless growth. Degrowth is an advanced reincarnation of the radical environmentalism of the 1970s.
