I am moderator of the International Military Network, which—with backing from the Charles Léopold Mayer Foundation—is involved in promoting new dialog between the military and civilians.
I have been a retired Colonel since 2005. Born on July 17, 1948 in Loerrach, FRG, in the Black Forest, I began my career within the Federal Armed Services (Bundeswehr) as Parachute Infantry officer. In 1980, I was admitted as trainee at the École Supérieure de Guerre (ESG) and, four years later, assigned as Liaison Officer/Instructor to the Direction de l’Enseignement Supérieur de l’Armée de Terre Française (DEMSAT). Commanding Officer at the 251st Parachute Regiment in Calw (Black Forest), I was then in charge of coordinating various French-German cooperation projects at defense-ministry level, in particular within the permanent Secretariat of the French-German Defense and Security Council at the Hôtel des Invalides (Paris). After my leaving active service in 2005, we settled in Hengersberg, Bavaria, with a country home in Soustons in the Landes (France). As active member of the organization « Public-spiritedness, Defense, Armed Forces, and the Nation », at EuroDefense (Deutschland) and of different think tanks on security and defense issues, I am committed to promoting a true “common security culture” in Europe and beyond.
